Messrs. De La Rue might be asked whether any improvements

have been made since 1895 in self-recording machines and how

many of such machines should be required to keep a check on

the 40 values of impressed stamps at present in use here and

also their cost.Also whether it would be necessary to have

such machines in duplicate in case of a break-down.

Before taking steps however, we recommend

that a letter be sent to the Straits asking as to how the

system works in that Colony. Particulars as to lists of ad-

and impressed stamps; whether thesystem is carried

out in every instance;whether delays are caused by the system

what average amount of work is got through in the day and

what ammage staff is required to do it,with anything more to

help us to understand the system.
